Our client came to us with the hopes of designing and building a highly eco-friendly and energy efficient home. They liked the idea of using SIPs, Structural Insulated Panels (“see below” or please note wherever you put the section on SIPs). The result was the very first City Approved home using this forward thinking building material and a LEED Platinum Certified Home.

Kaya created the highly original design of the home, building it with eco-friendly materials and insuring that the final result would be a highly energy efficient home. The creative dual exterior look was achieved by using Reclaimed Barn Siding for one section of the house and a unique weathering steel called Corten Steel. Both exteriors were utilized to eliminate the need for painting, while creating a beautiful rustic, yet modern look. Solar panels were also installed to fully realize the eco-friendly nature of this truly stunning home in NW Portland.

SIPs: Structural Insulated Panels
SIPs are a high performance building system using pre-manufactured panels consisting of insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings, typically oriented strand board (OSB). SIPs combine several components of conventional building, such as studs and joists, insulation, vapor barrier and air barrier. They can be used for many different applications, such as exterior wall, roof, floor and foundation systems. The result is a building system that is extremely strong, energy efficient and cost effective. Building with SIPs generally costs about the same as building with a wood frame construction when you factor in the labor savings resulting from shorter construction time and less jobsite waste.
